What Powers GotFrag

About GotFrag

GotFrag is the leading online magazine and news source for competitive computer gaming. Founded in the spring of 2002, we provide leading-edge, innovative content to the many avid fans following their favorite team, league or event. Our coverage has touched every continent and over 60 countries, and reaches over 550,000 readers every month. With a broad range of signature features and many community-driven interactions, GotFrag.com is the destination for a culture of fans and athletes in the arena of eSports.

We serve over 10 million pages per month of content. Couple with the wealth of community interaction features, some serious hardware, code, design, and bandwidth are required to drive this site. What powers GotFrag?

When we first started GotFrag, we were hosted on a single Pentium 3 box. The original code was custom-written in PHP by Jason Coene (our Chief Code Geek) -- which is why he has the UserID of 1. With the launch of GotFrag Version 2, we grew to over 10 servers functioning in a fully fault-tolerant, NAS-enabled array of FreeBSD and Windows Server 2003 servers. Jason, continuing in his Chief Code Geek role, has custom-written the code which powers our server farm--including a variety of C++ modules, php pages and our own caching system to speed up the delivery of our content.

In GotFrag Version 3, Jason completely re-wrote our front-end and back-end to grow with our network. Taking valuable lessons from the overwhelming attendance on our site and the needs of the expanded staff, the Chief Code Geek developed a scalable, custom-written thingy to make sure we could go about the business of putting up the world's best eSports content. Gotfrag delivers pages from multiple load-balanced FreeBSD web servers running Apache, tied to our custom content delivery system via an Apache module. We use PostgreSQL and MySQL for storing Gotfrag content, and have over 10 gigabytes of active TEXT content data in tens of millions of rows. Yeah, that's a lot!

Layered on top of this code, we have an outstanding design developed exclusively for GotFrag by Surreal-Media's intensely creative design teams. And underlying all of this infrastructure is the high-speed network of the world's largest game server provider, Recon Gamer. Looking for vital hardware stats? 27 processors (mostly Intel Xeon's), over 20 Gigabytes of memory (RAM), over 2 Terabytes of storage (disk), redundant gigabit fibre uplinks to the Internet (powered by Recon Gamer). We use more bandwidth than many mid-sized colleges!
